Remake Patek Philippe PP Gondolo 4962 Review | Classic Style: How Does This Replica Compare to the Original?

Okay, so let’s talk about this little project I got into recently. It all began when I saw this super elegant watch, the Patek Philippe Gondolo 4962/200R-001. Man, that thing is a beauty, a real classic style. But, you know, those watches are way out of my league, price-wise. So, I thought, “Why not try to remake it?”

First, I started digging around for everything I could find about this watch. Scouring the Patek Philippe website, I found some basic info on their models. It was pretty vague, just talking about the “pure lines” and how it’s the “very essence” of a wristwatch. I need more than that if I want to remake this watch.

Then, I spent hours on forums and watch enthusiast sites. I finally started to get some solid information. I gathered details about the materials, the movement – you name it. I also snapped some high-resolution photos from different angles. My camera roll was full of this watch. I mean, I almost wanted to give up because I couldn’t find a detailed photo of the back of the watch, but luckily I finally found one after hours of searching.

Next, I got my hands on some basic watchmaking tools. Nothing fancy, just the essentials. I’m not a pro, after all. I ordered some materials online – a decent, but not-too-expensive, rose gold-colored case, a simple leather strap, and a quartz movement. Quartz because I’m not messing with mechanical movements, not yet anyway.

The real fun began when I started putting it all together. Let me tell you, it was way harder than it looked. I followed some online tutorials for basic watch assembly. It took days. I messed up a few times, especially with the tiny screws. My fingers felt like sausages trying to handle those things.

I printed out a high-res photo of the watch face and carefully tried to replicate it on a plain white dial. It was like art class all over again. Used some fine-tipped paintbrushes and a lot of patience. The numerals were the toughest part. I have big hands, so it was really difficult for me to paint the small numerals, but I’m glad I finally made it.

After a lot of trial and error, and a few moments where I nearly gave up, I finally managed to put the whole thing together. It’s not perfect, not by a long shot. It doesn’t have that Patek Philippe magic, but it’s my version of the Gondolo 4962. It actually looks pretty decent on my wrist.

The Result

  • Case: Rose gold-colored, not real rose gold, but it looks the part.
  • Strap: Simple brown leather, nothing fancy.
  • Movement: Basic quartz, keeps time just fine.
  • Dial: Hand-painted, my best attempt at replicating the original.
  • Overall: It’s a decent homage to the original, in my opinion.

I wore it out the other day, and a friend actually asked me if it was a real Patek Philippe! I laughed and told him the whole story. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot. Maybe one day I’ll try to remake another classic. Who knows? But for now, I’m pretty happy with my little Gondolo-inspired creation.

And that was it! Hope you guys found my little experience-sharing interesting. It might be rough, but it is what it is. See ya next time!
